Mother's Day Good Guide

When it comes to Mother’s Day, how do you choose a gift that says “I love you thiiiiiiiiiiiis” much? How can you thank she who praises crappy artwork, claps at first words and still thinks of “her babies” no matter how old they are?  Here are some ideas from my friends and affiliates that might get the message across. Whether you’re shopping for your mum or dropping hints, let me know what you like the sound of!

1. Feelgood feet

Man I love Toms shoes. For every pair of shoes sold, a pair of hard-wearing, all-purpose shoes is given to someone who would otherwise have bare feet. And these millions of shoes aren’t made in industrialised hubs, they’re made in countries that need jobs and ethical trading, places like Kenya. And these days, the range extends well beyond alpagartas – there’s ballet flats, sandals, boots and platform heels in a staggering array of colours. Shop Women’s at TOMS.com

2. Balance and calm

Naughty Naturopath Mum has compiled some of her favourite products into a range of gift packs for mum. The Love Your Mum pack includes an Australian Bush Flower Essences Replenishing Night Cream and Intensive Hand Cream, plus a Woman Essence essential oil blend for hormonal balance, confidence and energy.

3. A homegrown hamper…

Homegrown Gifts creates gorgeous, eco-friendly gift hampers for all occasions. All items are made in Australia from small artisan producers. The beauty products are free from toxic chemicals, food stuff is organic where possible and textiles are lovingly made with earth-friendly fabrics and inks. Even the wrapping is low-impact, using twine, reusable and reused materials. I’m loving the beautiful Kitchen Garden Basket.

4. Or some homegrown tea!

The Tea Patch Kit by Planet Eco is just too cute for words. As a passionate herbal tea drinker and budding gardener, this grow-your-own pack ticks all my boxes. The pack contains everything you need to grow four life-affirming teas: chamomile, lemon balm, basil cinnamon and calendula, including detailed instructions and an organic cotton reusable tea bag. Love. Click here to see the full range of kits from Planet Eco.

5. A week off thinking

Mum, I apologise for all the times I said “whatever” when you asked what I wanted for dinner. Deciding what to feed my family day after day sometimes makes me want to hide under the kitchen table with a gin and tonic. Maybe one day I will. Hello Hello Fresh. These guys dream up a week’s dinner plan then deliver all the ingredients to your door, no thinking required. You can order a one-off Hello Fresh gift box here.

6. Something to cuddle up to

No, not that. This: a comfy, stylish, versatile (yes, all those things) cardi from Metalicus. This Aussie brand has been doing all the right things for years, including scoring accreditation from Ethical Clothing Australia. I love Metalicus for its basics that never need ironing and can be worn and layered numerous ways. I believe life is not complete without a beloved cardi in one’s wardrobe, do you agree? See the full range of Metalicus cardigans here.

7. Vitality (plus a 10% discount & $50!)

This is one for the Green Smoothie lovers. Whizz up ALL of your fruit and veg in a Vitamix, the king of kitchen blenders. This baby chops, creams, blends, grinds, kneads, churns, emulsifies, crushes, whisks, frappés, purées, and whips, making it easy to include more wholefoods in your family’s diet. Eco store Biome currently has 10% off the Vitamix range, plus you get a $50 voucher to spend in the on-line store.

8. Great advice for a healthy life

Brenda Janschek is a health coach and wellness blogger who helps busy parents (just like you) get their health on track by way of eating bountiful, wholesome, real food. If you’ve tried to improve your family’s diet but keep hitting roadblocks (budget, time, motivation, getting the kids to eat green stuff) then Brenda is the gal for you. She offers various programs and one-on-one services, and has gift vouchers available.

9. More than flowers

Princettia Pink Lace is a living gift that also helps the National Breast Cancer Foundation reach its goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. Better than cut flowers, this sweet potted plant comes with a 50c donation to NBCF; 200,000 have already been sold. Available from garden and hardware centres. Also look out for Ribbons of Hope, a variegated tree growing up to 12m that also includes a donation in the purchase price. There’s a whole heap of other great gift ideas on the NBCF website, scroll to the bottom section, Pink Products.
